What is a periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who completed a postgraduate specialist degree in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists undergo 4 additional years of studying after qualifying as a dentist. At Cape Periodontal Specialists, we have received extensive training, and we are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and in the placement of dental implants.

In general, we treat more problematic periodontal cases, such as severe gum disease or patients with a complex medical history. We also treat patients with severe gum problems using a variety of surgical procedures.

We offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing as well as cosmetic periodontal procedures the treat receding gum lines in addition, we are specially trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants.

When should I see a periodontist?

Some patients’ periodontal needs can be managed alone by a general dentist. However, if you have more serious gum issues, then a visit to a periodontist may be a necessity. Gum disease in patients with other chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus or immune suppression, should also be seen by a specialist periodontist as gum infection poses a risk to the systemic health of such patients. Patients who have moderate or severe levels of periodontal disease, or patients with complex cases, will best be treated by a partnership between the periodontist and dentist.
